The Favor of God

Psalm 84:11 (NIV) For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

In his book The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell observes that struggling businesses are often turned around by one key decision. Many once-foundering companies are now thriving and successful because of a choice that became the tipping point. Although targeted to those in business management, the principle also applies to individuals. For those that are believers, a “tipping point” decision would be to seek the favor of God.

We see many people in the scriptures who sought the favor of God. "Then Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD listened to him…" 2 Kings 13:4, ESV. Today, ask God to grant you His favor! He can give you favor in every area-in business, in your family and personal life, in your finances and health.

I looked up the word "favor" in my dictionary and found quite a long list of definitions and descriptions, like to show preferential treatment, to give advantage to another, and to give special favors but one stood out to me: Favor is kindness beyond what is due or usual. Isn't that great?

A story I heard in the news about kindness comes to mind. It was about an 85-year-old man who used to eat breakfast in a Kroger supermarket every morning. He was bossy, very particular, and even remarked that the female employees could stand to lose weight. A few weeks after the old man died of cancer, several of the shocked clerks received checks for $10,000 from his estate. Why? Even when the old man had been cranky and insulting, the staff waiting on him had treated him pleasantly and tried to cheer him up with a little tender care! They even went beyond the call of duty by taking turns to visit him in the hospital! Clearly, none of them expected anything in return. The staff extended to him----kindness.

In 2nd Samuel 5 we find that David has been anointed and accepted as King over all Israel. David has come to the zenith of his kingly career. He is moving from victory to victory to victory. These are indeed good years for David. The question comes-what next? Will David just enjoy all of the blessings? Will David just rejoice in all of the successes, which are his? Turn himself inward? Or will David remember his friends and remember promises that he has made to them? David chooses to show kindness. We read, “David asked, "Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2 Samuel 9:1 (NIV). Now the house of Saul wasn’t nice to David, but Saul’s son Jonathan and David had a covenant friendship that David intended to honor.

I like the story recorded in the chapter. David wants to show kindness for sake of Jonathan, it is a picture of God the father wanting to show kindness to us because of His Son Jesus. You are a candidate to receive the Kindness of God, because of Jesus

Uptil now we have taken the dictionary definition of Favor and now I want to give you a definition for favor based on the biblical picture of the word ‘favor’ as we see it in the stories of the Bible.

Favor is when God chooses to bless you based on grace and not your merits which positions you for increased influence, supernatural turnarounds, limitations broken, dreams awakened, missed opportunities redeemed, and wide open new doors of divine possibilities!

I believe Favor is one of the fruits of Grace therefore all principles in scriptures regarding grace apply to the favor of God. The Bible says, grace comes through Jesus Christ, so does favor. Grace come to those who are humble, so does favor. You can grow in grace, you can grow in Favor. Grace works through faith, so does favor.

At Intn’l Family Church we are declaring this season to be a season of favor, divine

possibilities, awesome God moments, life-changing turnarounds, and God's time to favor us and those that are connected to us. “But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation”. [Ps. 69:13, NIV]

JOB 33:26, NIRV ''He prays to God and finds favor with him. He sees God's face and shouts with joy. God makes him right with himself again.''
